‘He was definitely the best,’ one fan says of the soulful third-place finisher.
By Gil Kaufman

It happens every year. By the time you drill down to the top three on “American Idol,” tears are shed and teeth are gnashed when host Ryan Seacrest announces the third-place finisher.

After coming so far, climbing so high and landing within one episode of the show’s finale, whatever beloved singer makes it to the precipice of potential fame is sent to the sidelines to watch the final showdown and his/her fans are left dejected.

That’s the general mood of Joshua Ledet’s followers after the soul-stirring 20-year-old Westlake, Louisiana throwback singer was sent packing on Thursday night’s elimination show
, paving the way for pocket diva Jessica Sanchez and (be)low key pawn shop worker Phillip Phillips to battle it out next week.

“They sabotaged Joshua and Jessica,” raged reader Rienell John Llevado in a comment on an MTV News story in which Ledet called his elimination
 a “relief.”

“Jessica got lucky she has the support she needed to go on. They will do the same thing again this Tuesday. They are giving their golden boy the best to bring him on top. After all, isn’t ‘American Idol’ loves white guys with guitar only? Don’t worry Josh, you’re right when you said you could still have a successful career even if you don’t win ‘Idol.’”

Another reader, Keish, claimed that the voting was rigged because after always getting a message that their vote was counted before, there was no such message Thursday night. “I voted so many times & still got nothing! Josh you are the winner!!!”

Khan lamented that Ledet — who was touted by the judges as one of the best singers
to ever grace the “Idol” stage — should not have been eliminated, because, “someone with that kind of voice should never be voted off a singing competition.” A number agreed and added that Joshua is probably better in the long run because his singing style has a timeless quality and, besides, the recent track record
of WGWG (white guys with guitars) has been pretty dismal anyway.

“American did not vote based on the talent,” opined Lamran2010. “How come Joshua was voted off … it is not fair.” Interestingly, given the shrieks of joy Phillips often elicits on the show, a number of the comments derided his meat-and-potatoes singing style and predicted that voters would turn out in force for Sanchez next week.

“Wow , how can America get it so hopelessly wrong year after year” wondered Muzz W. “Go Jessica, Phil Phillips should have gone weeks ago.” Then again, Koo was not having it, bidding “good riddents [sic] Joshua” and proclaiming the singer a “drama mama.”

Amid the sometimes nasty back-and-forth, writer Barry made a plea for peace, saying, “All three have sooo much talent!!! America has voted and unfortunately Joshua goes home. But don’t take anything away from Jessica and Phil now!! The finale is all about the songs they sing and how they sing them. It’s also about stage presence!!” His pick: Sanchez.

As many eagle-eyed “Idol” watchers are aware, it’s not always the winners who end up winning, which is why LaNell was just fine with Ledet going home early. “Joshua became a winner the moment he stepped on the stage,” she wrote. “He got the exposure he needed to get his career started … he will go far because of his talent,” adding that she figured a younger generation might not totally get his “good ole Motown sound.”

Do you think Joshua Ledet deserved a spot in the “American Idol” finale? Leave your comment below!

Actors will play younger and older version of Russian doctor in four-part dramedy ‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook.’
By Fallon Prinzivalli

What do Don Draper and Harry Potter have in common? They’re both about to become doctors.

The Internet was buzzing earlier this month when rumors popped up that actors Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe were set to play the older and younger version of a Russian doctor in a four-part British miniseries set during the end of World War I. On Friday (May 18), Sky Arts, the network set to air the series in 2013, confirmed that we’ll indeed get to see Dr. HammRad in action. “A Young Doctor’s Notebook” is a dramedy based on a short-story collection by Mikhail Bulgakov, a Russian writer and playwright.

“I have been an obsessive Bulgakov reader for a couple of years now,” Radcliffe said in a statement about the television program. “So when the opportunity to become involved in this project came up, I could barely contain my excitement. The book is funny, grotesque and heartfelt in equal measure and I look forward to working with a great group of people to help bring it to life.”

Hamm agreed with his new co-star’s enthusiasm, saying, “I am thrilled to get the opportunity to work on such rich source material with such fantastically talented people whose work I greatly respect.”

The actors will play the same character in different time periods, occasionally interacting with each other. The original rumors were reported by The Sun, which said the show “will incorporate dark humour as the doctor attempts to overcome self-doubts about his competence.”

When MTV News spoke to Radcliffe last summer, he explained he’s attracted to darker tales because he finds them much more interesting.

“I don’t want to make a boring love story about two people who meet and then are happy. That’s boring, and that doesn’t exist,” Radcliffe said. “I also do like playing slightly disenfranchised characters like Arthur is in ‘The Woman in Black.’ He’s someone who’s grieving and whose grief has put him to the edge of madness and also has sort of made him ostracize himself from society. I guess I like the dark stuff. I find it more interesting.”

Hamm said producer Clelia Mountford and production company Big Talk have been “unabashedly” advocating for the series. “I share their great enthusiasm for bringing something original, dark, funny and moving to light,” the actor said. “Also, I have been watching ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ on infinite loop, and I think I’ve finally got this accent thing sorted…”

Juliet Simms and Jermaine Paul also pull out all the stops for their mentors and America.
By John Mitchell

Tony Lucca on “The Voice”
Photo: NBC

With a trip to the finals on the line, Monday night’s (April 30) “Voice” semifinals saw the remaining two artists from each team take the stage to sing their hearts out for America’s votes and high scores from the coaches, which, combined, determine who moves on to next week’s finals.

First up was Mouseketeer-turned-rocker Tony Lucca, who ditched his guitar for the first time in the competition to show off a different side of himself, singing “How You Like Me Now.” Lucca upped his game last week with his rocking rendition of Britney Spears’ ” … Baby One More Time” and knew he had a lot to prove.

Without his guitar to hide behind, Lucca delivered plenty of pop-star swagger. Blake summed it up most succinctly, saying Lucca’s swinging performance was reminiscent of similarly suited-up Robert Palmer in his prime. Even Christina, who has often been Lucca’s harshest critic, went on and on with praise for so long that host Carson Daly cut her off. (Didn’t he notice her tiara? Who cuts off a pop diva in fishnets and a bejeweled crown?)

Erin Willett entered the ring with a “special song choice”: a rearranged take on David Guetta and Usher’s dance thumper “Without You.” It was a risk, but that’s what Erin, who said during rehearsals she felt like she’s “never had a moment” on the show, was after. She was expectedly powerful, earned a thumbs-up from the judges and got very emotional onstage when she finished singing, but we’re not sure everything came together just right to make the performance memorable for the right reasons.

Throughout the competition, Christina has pushed classically trained Chris Mann into pop and rock territory to prove — both to himself and the voting public — that he could do more than sing opera (as he did during the blind auditions). However, as the contest winds down, Aguilera was keen to show off what attracted her to Mann in the first place (his perfect voice) and gave the singer one of the most well-known classical songs ever, “Ave Maria.” He nailed it, so much so that Aguilera caught Cee Lo tearing up. Aguilera was so moved by Mann’s performance that she jumped from her chair and joined him onstage to give him a hug.

Fan favorite Jamar Rogers from Team Cee Lo was next to the stage with the classic “If You Don’t Know Me by Now.” A born entertainer with a penchant for high-energy performances, Rogers reeled it in this time, hoping to showcase his voice, and the judges took notice.

“Forget the competition for a minute,” Adam said. “I’m just a fan of what you do.”

Though they are ostensibly competitors, there’s always a good bit of camaraderie among the contestants on “The Voice,” and that showed through when the teams joined forces for group performances of the Killers “All These Things That I’ve Done” (Teams Cee Lo and Adam) and Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory” (Teams Christina and Blake). Similarly, though they may bicker in their judges’ chairs, Christina was bobbing her head (a task given how much that jeweled tiara must weigh) along to Blake’s performance of his new single “Over.”

Hoping to show that Mann isn’t the only true powerhouse male vocalist in the competition, Blake paired former Alicia Keys backup singer Jermaine Paul with Journey’s massive ballad “Open Arms.” Jermaine rose to the challenge, digging deep into the song’s emotion and tackling the song’s runs with aplomb.

The judges were not shy about praising Paul’s performance. “You came in and you murdered that song,” Christina said. “Jermaine, I would like to congratulate you, because you are no longer a background singer, my friend,” Adam added. But his own coach made the most crucial point, given how close Paul is to the finals, saying, “You’re peaking at the right time.”

Katrina Parker also opted to change things up, singing “Killing Me Softly” in the style of the Fugees’ remake. Outside her usual Adele-like belting, she showed off a new vocal personality — more sultry and raspy than ever. Noting that later in the night the judges would be forced to award percentages to the contestants and that Tony Lucca and Adam are maybe a more natural mentoring fit, Christina championed Parker, telling Levine to “take a look at Katrina Parker because she’s a star.”

Having saved her from elimination twice in the competition, we think he gets it, Christina.

While many singers opted to show off a different side of themselves, being in the bottom two last week chased Lindsay Pavao right back into her hipster-indie wheelhouse, where she found Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” waiting for her. The performance was very Florence and the Machine-lite, with Pavao looking ethereal while strumming a guitar and sounding as unique as ever. Even Blake complimented Christina’s strategy of returning her contestants to their roots (Mann with opera and Pavao with light indie rock).

The final contestant to hit the stage was rocker Juliet Simms, singing James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” She earned a standing ovation from her coach Cee Lo and fawning praise from the rest of the judges (Adam said she was “the one to beat” tonight), but Aguilera’s words of support — saying that Simms sings for herself and that often leads to the most gut wrenching performances — were perhaps the most important, as she tore the roof off the 2007 Grammys with her take on this song.

At the very end of the show, the coaches were given 100 points to divide between their two contestants, the results of which will be tabulated alongside America’s vote and revealed Tuesday to determine who moves on to the finals.

Actress sees Widow’s relationship with Hawkeye as ‘another movie.’
By Kara Warner

There are only a few more days left to wait until “Marvel’s The Avengers” is unleashed upon the masses and moviegoers everywhere get to revel in the superheroic feat of director Joss Whedon in fully fleshing out so many characters in one giant movie. Two of those characters who get significantly more screen time than they’ve had in previous Marvel outings are Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff (played by Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye/ Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner).

Although we don’t see their backstory in the film, the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents have obviously spent a considerable amount of time working together and share a deep connection and mutual respect. When MTV News caught up with Johansson recently, we asked for her thoughts on what direction their relationship might take in future Marvel movies.

“I see that as another movie,” Johansson’s co-star Mark Ruffalo answered first.

“They do work very well together,” Johansson admitted. “And I do know that Marvel is invested in the S.H.I.E.L.D. world. I do think you need a bit of the fantasy to keep it alive unless you go really dark with it. I’m hoping that if the fans give the nod of approval that there will be a future for Hawkeye and Widow somewhere in that S.H.I.E.L.D. world. Although I’d like to take the Widow story way back,” Johansson added.

“To the origins?” Ruffalo asked.

“Yeah, it would be fun to do an origin story,” she said.

No matter where Black Widow ends up, Johansson has said she’s just happy to have survived the filming of “Avengers.”

“We all took a pretty big beating,” she said. “The stunt sequence that I’ve been the most proud of is probably my fight with … ” Johansson stopped abruptly. “Actually, I don’t know if I can say! All I can say is that I had to fight someone else in this film, and they beat the crap out of me in stunt rehearsals. I have to say I could not believe it,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Can you hold it back, OK? You know, I’m trying to work it out here. I’ve got smaller muscles than you.’ I was dragged across the [floor]. When we finally finished [filming] that scene, I was just happy to be alive.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

One Direction, the Wanted, Jonas Brothers move on to Elite Eight. Voting in third round begins now!
By Christina Garibaldi

The British boy bands are in it to win it!

MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands advanced into the third round on Monday (April 30), with U.K. group Westlife continuing their impressive run by beating out O-Town in the Sweet 16, and England’s 5ive overtaking LFO. The two groups join English newcomers One Direction and the Wanted, as well as Big Time Rush and Mindless Behavior in the Elite Eight.

New Kids on the Block had a tough matchup against the Beatles. In the end, the Boston band just couldn’t gain enough votes to get them through. But the closest match was a fight to the finish between the Jonas Brothers and Hanson. The JoBros ultimately overtook the trio in a last-minute surge of voting to continue on in the competition.

So what do the Elite Eight matchups look like now? Read on for a breakdown and remember polls close at noon ET on Wednesday!

Midwest
Westlife vs. the Beatles: Westlife’s fanbase is no joke. Fans from around the world have been voting for these guys around the clock to ensure they make it to the finals. But the group, who are currently in rehearsals for their farewell tour, will have a tough Elite Eight matchup in the Beatles. The Fab Four barely made it by New Kids on the Block in the Sweet 16, so expect another close matchup in this round. Fun fact about these two groups: Westlife’s first seven singles debuted at the top of the U.K. charts, tying with the Beatles’ record.

East
5ive vs. Jonas Brothers: 5ive have surprised many of the fans watching this competition. They took out two of the biggest boy bands of the late ’90s in the early stages of competition, ‘NSYNC and LFO, and will now face off against the Jonas Brothers. While 5ive haven’t been an active group since 2001, they fanbase is still very loyal. It might be tough, however, to get past the Jonases. The JoBros are still very much a group and are reportedly working on their next album, which may motivate fans to keep voting. This matchup will most likely be another nail-biter.

West
The Wanted vs. Big Time Rush: Rushers are making their presence known in this competition as they helped their group, Big Time Rush, overpower R&B chart-toppers Boyz II Men. Things should get very interesting now as BTR take on the Wanted: The Brit newcomers fought to the death in the last round, barely making it by the Monkees, so be ready for another down-to-the-wire clash for this pair of relatively new boy bands.

South
One Direction vs. Mindless Behavior: This should be a fight to the finish with fans of both groups casting votes like crazy. Mindless had a big win over NKOTBSB and they hope to carry that momentum into the Elite Eight. But 1D fans have also been voting furiously, giving One Direction relatively easy wins over their competition thus far.

Voting for the Elite Eight in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Wednesday, May 2. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits for their boy-band video takeovers each day and make sure to spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Battle of the Boy Bands interactive bracket!
