‘A lot of people kinda taking our swag too; I just wanted to bring that back and take that back from them,’ Bangz tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Maurice Bobb

Mixtape: Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa
Real Spit: Kirko Bangz has been progressing quite nicely. Even before his breakout single “Drank in My Cup” began charting on the Billboard Hot 100, the Houston upstart was laying groundwork in H-Town’s mixtape scene. In 2009, he dropped the aptly titled Progression, and now, three years later, he has followed up with its sequel Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa on mixtape site Datpiff.
In this new digital era, where most rap artists occupy the same space on the Internet, it seems that where a rapper hails from has become less important. Still, Bangz clearly is looking to put on for his city.
“People were like, ‘Where you from?’ They thought I was from Cali, Atlanta, stuff like that. So really, with the mixtape and my last single ‘Drank in My Cup,’ I wanted people to know I was from H-Town,” Kirko told Mixtape Daily. “It’s real H-Town: We have stuff for the girls, of course, we got hip-hop stuff, we got storytelling stuff.”
Progression 2 starts off with “Say Hello,” an introductory freestyle over DJ Khaled and Drake’s “I’m On One.” It’s not surprising that Kirko would jump on a track Drizzy has made famous, considering he has drawn more than a few comparisons to the Toronto rapper, thanks to his penchant for both rapping and singing. While Drake is openly inspired by Houston’s screw culture, Kirko truly embodies his city’s sonic characteristics on “Drank in My Cup.” The slow-rolling, lean-inspired cut repurposes Houston’s signature underground sound for radio; it debuted at #96 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 this week.
“A lot of people kinda taking our swag too. I just wanted to bring that back and take that back from them,” Bangz said, never naming who the swagger jackers actually are.
On “Play Me,” KB takes on Drake’s “Trust Issues” and furthers the comparisons. Paul Wall reps for H-Town and shows up on “Knowmtalmbout,” and on “Trill Young N—a,” Kirk stakes his claim in the streets of his hometown.
For the most part Progression 2 keeps a consistent vibe with a number of soul-dripped, screw-inspired anthems. He does switch things up, however, particularly toward the end on the hilarious story-telling joint “Ugly Bitches,” where he recalls all of his less than glamorous sexual conquests.
It’s not flawless, but over the course of 13 tracks, Kirko Bangz shows a pretty solid progression.
Joints to Check For » “Touch the Sky.” “It was really brought to me, like, it was already on a plate; I just had to put the food on the plate. I wanted a real hip-hop type beat. A lot of people don’t know that I actually can spit a little bit, so I wanted to spit and touch on a lot of things that I thought about. Like a lot of people say a lot of stuff about me, so I touched on those things on that song and kept it real hip-hop.
» “Play Me.” “I feel like a lot of people and girls be trying to play me. I’mma playa, so I had to address that situation, like, ‘Don’t try and play me.’ ”

Renée Zellweger, Adrien Brody and others have faded since their night of Oscar glory. By Kevin P. Sullivan

Oscar night is supposed to be the night where dreams come true and careers are made, but for many actors over the years, it has marked the beginning of a downward trend. Among the list of past winners, you’ll find some of Hollywood’s most timeless faces. But you’ll also find some names that have faded since their night of Oscar glory.
Through no fault of their own, some actors have struggled to escape from under the weight of an Academy Award win — especially if it came early in their career. Despite their best efforts, they have yet to repeat their previous levels of success and live up to the title “Academy Award winner.”
Here are some of the steepest falls for Oscar winners in recent years:
Hilary Swank Despite two wins for Best Actress, Hilary Swank’s career maps out with two peaks and large valleys in between. Not counting her winning roles in “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby,” none of Swank’s leading roles have caught much traction either financially or critically. Her more commercial choices like “P.S. I Love You” and “The Reaping” failed to capture their respective target audiences, and Oscar bait like “Conviction” and “Amelia” saw only mild critical response.
Cuba Gooding, Jr. His iconic role in “Jerry Maguire” and the catchphrase that followed (“Show me the money!”) marked the beginning of a steep and fast drop in Gooding’s career. Embarrassing roles in films like “Snow Dogs” and “Boat Trip” became examples of how far an Academy Award winner could fall. Gooding has made some notable appearances in films like “Red Tails” and “Pearl Harbor,” but his turn in “Radio” earned ridicule from Robert Downey Jr.’s character in “Tropic Thunder.”
Renee Zellweger After two previous nominations, Zellweger won her golden statue for “Cold Mountain” but has yet to earn similar praise since. She earned three nominations in as many years, but since then, the accolades have dried up. Her major starring roles in “Miss Potter” and “New in Town” did not live up to the critical or financial standards set by “Chicago” or “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”
Adrien Brody Though he had a notable cameo in this year’s critical darling “Midnight in Paris,” Brody has picked his movie roles selectively, appearing only once or twice a year and not always as the star. He found moderate box-office success as the second leading man behind a giant ape in Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” remake, but starring vehicles like “The Jacket” fell flat.
Kim Basinger Though Basinger’s decreasing presence in Hollywood after a decade as a blond big-screen bombshell may have coincided with her Oscar win, the signs of a dropoff after are there. Her role in “L.A. Confidential” became iconic and one of the film’s key images, but Basinger’s career began to lose steam soon after. She starred in minor dramas like “I Dreamed of Africa” and “The Door in the Floor.” She even made a memorable turn as Eminem’s mother in “8 Mile,” but smaller roles kept her from the former spotlight.

‘American Idol’ judges aren’t looking to hop on the ‘Moves Like Jagger’ bandwagon with their own collabo, Lopez tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Jim Cantiello
Jennifer Lopez Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images
The usual rule in Hollywood is that if something works once, it’s probably worth doing it again, and again, and again, and then maybe once more just to make sure the concept hasn’t run out of legs.
But even though “The Voice” mentors Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera smashed digital sales records with their collaboration “Moves Like Jagger,” don’t expect “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez to follow in their fancy footsteps.
“None of us are kind of followers in that way,” Lopez told MTV News when asked if she and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler might consider putting their very different pipes together to see if they could capture their own lightning in a bottle. “We kind of do what feels right, and anybody that’s been in the business a long time knows that you don’t chase.”
You could see why they might consider it, though. Since joining the revamped “Idol” panel last year, Lopez and Tyler have helped set a standard for how career artists can reboot their fortunes by making a move to prime time. Aerosmith’s back catalog sales blew up, while Lopez scored her biggest hit in years with the “Idol”-promoted single “On the Floor.”
Despite that visibility, the singer said she’s not into leading from behind. “You set the trail. You go out front, and anything that we do is something that feels good to us,” she said, leaving the door open just a crack. “If that happened, it would happen. If a performance happened, it would happen. But it would have to feel real. … Last year, we talked about performing together on the show for the finale, and we just couldn’t agree on the same thing that felt good for all of us, so we just didn’t do it.”

Singer opens up about the late pop icon as he releases his cover of her track ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop).’ By Jocelyn Vena
Whitney Houston Photo: Jun Sato/ WireImage
Just days after a number of A-listers paid tribute to the late, great Whitney Houston at her funeral on Saturday in New Jersey, R&B crooner Robin Thicke decided to pay homage to the singer in his own way.
The singer dropped a cover of Houston’s classic track “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” over the weekend, arranging the song with a piano and his own sweet falsetto voice. Released in November 1995, the original version was the lead single off Houston’s “Waiting to Exhale” soundtrack. Thicke’s soulful version definitely calls to mind Babyface, who wrote and produced the song for the late star. Noticeably, Thicke changed the song from the third person to the first person, making it a bit more personal.
“I was thinking about Whitney and how incredible she was and remembered I had recorded this song years ago but never released it,” Thicke said on Tuesday (February 21) in a statement to MTV News. “When I listened to it again, I was overcome by emotion, because the lyrics express everything I’m feeling right now.”
He continued that the song reminds us what was unique about the late singer, who died over Grammy weekend in Los Angeles. “That’s what was so special about Whitney, she had an amazing ability to connect to all of us and at the same time make us feel inspired,” he said. “We love Whitney Houston and always will!”
Over the weekend, in a sea of moving tributes to the star from her closest friends — including Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly and gospel greats BeBe and CeCe Winans, Donnie McClurkin and Kim Burrell — Kevin Costner’s speech about his “The Bodyguard” co-star stood as one of the homegoing’s stand-out moments.
“Off you go, Whitney, off you go, escorted by an army of angels to your heavenly father,” Costner told the room in tears. “And when you sing before him, don’t you worry — you’ll be good enough.”

Cast may instead put on a charity concert later this year to support its Give a Note campaign. By Jocelyn Vena

After two successful runs in the past, “Glee” won’t hit the road this summer.
Despite earlier reports that the show would kick off another tour this year, a rep tells The Hollywood Reporter, “We currently have no plans of touring the cast this summer.” However, there are plans to hold a charity concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles later this year.
Proceeds from the show would benefit the “Glee” Give a Note campaign, which supports music education programs in schools.
Sources told Billboard.com that dates have already been discussed, but the show or shows are only in the planning stages. September seems to be the target date for the charity concert.
Although a concert tour had been discussed, the focus now seems to be on the charity gig. “We have been talking about continuing our work on a next phase of ‘Glee’ Give a Note,” said Jane Balek, Give a Note’s COO and assistant executive director of the National Association for Music Education. “But no definite projects were discussed.” She added that “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy and Fox are “truly supportive of the mission of NAfME and its Give a Note Foundation.”
Last year’s tour was later made into a 3-D film, “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” The film opened last August, and despite the show’s TV success, it failed to ignite the box office, profiting only $5.7 million in its opening weekend and landing at #11 that week.

‘People have to get past that ‘incident’ in ’09,’ one fan tweeted. By Jocelyn Vena
Rihanna Photo: FilmMagic
On Monday night, Chris Brown and Rihanna dropped the long-prognosticated remix to Ri’s “Birthday Cake,” from her Talk That Talk album. The duo also dropped a remix of Brown’s Fortune track “Turn Up the Music,” all on Rihanna’s 24th birthday.
The producers behind the “Cake” track, Da Internz, promised that the remix would “shock,” and they didn’t lie. Considering that it was just three years ago that Brown assaulted Rihanna over Grammy weekend, the two coming together for the sexy duet marks a new chapter for the singers, one that has been met with varied reactions from fans.
On one side of the argument are fans who appreciate the song regardless of the singers’ past. Speedy12 wrote, “First of all Rihanna has to live her life … people have to get past that ‘incident’ in ’09. You guys are forgetting he has never hit Rihanna b4 that time … THEY HAD A FIGHT!! Like most of us do … they have grown up and moved past that time. Role model or not … RIHANNA CAN’T LIVE FOR HER FANS … SHE LIVES FOR HER!! And the sooner you delusional ignorant idiots realize that, the quicker they, along with everyone else who’s quick to judge, can move on. LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!”
Watch: A Look Back At Chris Brown & Rihanna: Love In Trouble
Sandra D. had a similar reaction, writing, “I realllyyyyy loved BOTH Cake and the Turn Up The Music remix. They took a bold decision, but I believe it will show the world that it is finally time to move on and get back to making great music! LOVE Chris’ music video to Turn Up The Music too!”
KringleChick wrote, “Loving both of these songs. Glad they were able to put the music first and let everything else stay behind. Both are great artists and these songs rock. Their voices are amazing together!” For other fans, however, their past is hard to ignore, and many readers met the release with disbelief and anger, citing the 2009 assault. “Why, Rihanna? Why?” LP54 wrote. “I know for lots of people it’s just a song, but for others it’s their role model saying it’s okay.
Whether Rihanna likes it or not she is a role model. Her making this song is telling those girls that you can go back to him even if he has abused you. Chris has nothing to lose from this but she has sponsors, fans, and support from the media. With two songs, Riri could lose a lot.”
What do you think of Chris Brown and Rihanna working together in light of their history? Sound off in the comments.

RedFoo and Sky Blu throw epic house party in cartoon-like clip featuring David Hasselhoff. By Jocelyn Vena
LMFAO Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images
First they had us shufflin’. Then they introduced us to the wiggle. And for their latest video, for the club-thumping track “Sorry for Party Rocking,” the guys of LMFAO are throwing the ultimate cartoon-like house party.
The clip, which premiered Monday night, opens with an older couple (played by LMFAO’s Sky Blu and RedFoo) arguing over the ruckus of a nearby house party, hosted by LMFAO’s very own Sky and Red. When the older gentleman makes his way over to the party to complain, he gets the door slammed in his face. Inside the party, the guys and their colorful crew are wearing their animal-print and neon-colored clothes, dancing and drinking the night away.
When they refuse to shut down the party, the older man calls the police. But instead of shutting it down, they join the madness. So does everyone else: from pizza delivery guys and sexy nurses to truck drivers and David Hasselhoff (who appeared with the guys onstage during their 2011 American Music Awards performance). And, while the older man is trying to shut the party down, he finds his wife inside enjoying the festivities. Who could not be charmed by a house party thrown by Red and Sky?
As the video begins to come to a close, RedFoo falls over from all the good times. When he is whisked away by an ambulance, he drops his phone, which is later picked up by someone who begins to party rock to “Anthem.” Christopher “Kid” Reid (from Kid’N'Play, who know a thing or two about house parties) arrives at the scene as the party seems to be winding down to complain about all the noise.
In the final seconds, the video very quickly references the hospital scene that opens the group’s very memorable “Party Rock Anthem” video, where they fought off a zombie-like dancing epidemic. Perhaps this party had something to do with the origins of the plague in that video.
Directed by Mickey Finnegan (who directed “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It” as well as clips for Cee Lo Green and Soulja Boy), the whole video takes place in a world made up of cardboard cutouts and animations, making it a surreal escape. The video includes smooth dances moves from former “America’s Best Dance Crew” dance crews Quest Crew and the Beat Freaks.

Family and friends said their final farewell to the iconic singer who was buried at the Fairview Cemetery in New Jersey. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy
Whitney Houston Photo: WireImage
NEWARK, New Jersey — Superstar singer Whitney Elizabeth Houston was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Westfield, New Jersey today. She was buried next to her father John Houston at the Fairview Cemetery. According to reports, fans and onlookers lined streets with memorials and signs, watching as the police-escorted motorcade and the hearse carrying her casket drove to the cemetery.
The 48-year-old died on February 11, 2012. She was found dead inside her Beverly Hilton hotel room at approximately 3:55 p.m. PT in Los, Angeles. The official cause of death is still being investigated. She was at the Beverly Hilton in preparation for mentor Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party.
Houston was memorialized in a grand ceremony yesterday at the New Hope Baptist Church, the same church she grew up singing in as a child in Newark, New Jersey. The “homegoing” ceremony, marking the singer’s spiritual return “home”, lasted some five hours and was conducted in the Baptist tradition. Although invite-only, it was nationally televised and streamed on Livestream for fans. It featured family friends, professional colleagues and dignitaries from all walks including daughter Bobbi Kristina, cousin Dionne Warwick, actor/filmmaker Tyler Perry, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Flags in New Jersey flew half mast in Houston’s honor.
Bittersweet, the ceremony celebrated Houston’s amazing life and accomplishments and guests shared personal anecdotes about their Nippy, her nickname. Clive Davis mused, “You wait for a voice like that for a lifetime. A face like that. A smile like that. A presence like that for a lifetime. And when one person embodies it all — well, it takes my breath away.” Bodyguard costar Kevin Costner fought back tears as he said, “Go sing for your heavenly father, Whitney.”
Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, the Winans family and R. Kelly were among those who gave Houston a musical send-off. Stevie Wonder personalized the lyrics of his classic “Ribbon In The Sky” to “There’s an angel in the choir of love” for Whitney while R. Kelly performed a moving rendition of “I Look to You”, a song he penned that Whitney featured on her 2009 album of the same name. The proceedings ended in a fitting manner with Whitney’s most famous song, “I Will Always Love You,” playing as her casket was somberly walked out of the church.
Whitney was at her peak the definitive pop diva that all others were measured up to. Her phenomenal vocal range and gorgeous looks made her a multi-genre sensation. The daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, her pristine voice ruled the 80s and 90s with a slew of chart-topping albums and memorable songs like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” and “The Greatest Love of All”; she broke the chart record with seven consecutive Billboard #1 songs. Her promising film career included roles like 1992′s The Bodyguard and 1995′s Waiting to Exhale and her rendition of “I Will Always Love You” from the former film stands as one of the most recognized and beloved songs in pop history. Houston’s artistic influence is indelible still on subsequent generations from Mariah Carey to Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson.
Despite a long-standing public battle with addiction and a tumultuous relationship with then-husband Bobby Brown, Whitney was working on staging a personal and professional comeback at the time of her death. She had wrapped filming on the movieSparkle with Jordin Sparks and was working on new music. Since her untimely passing, Whitney has sold over 1 million albums and singles. The diva lives on.
